Pupils impress with engineering ideas

Nippon Gases attends Primary Engineer Leaders Award Ceremony

School pupils impress with their award-winning engineering ideas at the University of Lincoln

As part of Nippon Gases' sponsorship with Primary Engineer, they are a national partner of their unique annual competition 'If you were an engineer, what would you do?'

Open to pupils aged 3-19, they are asked what problem they would most like to solve. Through interviews with engineering professionals and their own experiences, children design creative solutions to everyday problems. Bringing together problem-solving, literacy, listening and creativity, they get to use a wide array of skills used daily by engineers.

In June, children from the East Central region were welcomed to the University of Lincoln to celebrate their ideas and for the winners to be announced.

Nick James, Maintenance Manager and June Wass, HR Manager from Nippon Gases, helped judge the region’s entries. They were impressed with the high standard, including a solar-powered blood pressure monitor bear for children, an auto-starting dog calming solution, and the Graf-Splint designed by Thomas S for his sister to help reduce the blisters and pain she suffers from wearing her current splint.

The judges special award went to Jasmine R from Normanton House School, who designed The Sign Language Gloves. Once the gloves are put on, all a person needs to do is speak loudly and clearly, and the gloves perform the sign language hand gestures.

“I was impressed by all of the entries, and I think Primary Engineer is an excellent way of encouraging children to develop engineering skills and promote engineering careers. This award ceremony, held at the Isaac Newton Building, was a great occasion and opportunity to celebrate and recognise the children's efforts. It was a pleasure to be able to award badges and certificates.”
