An efficient gas
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a naturally occuring substance that is non-flammable, colourless, odourless, and slightly acidic.
CO2 is a versatile material available as high-pressure cylinder gas, relatively low pressure refrigerated liquid (LIC) or as dry ice. It can be used in many processes and applications across a wide range of industries from water and pharma to food and beverage.
Carbon dioxide has several uses within the food industry, ranging from controlled atmosphere stunning of pigs and chickens, cooling of manufactured food, to gas packaging of food (modified atmosphere packaging).
CO2 is also used as an additive to oxygen for medical use as a respiratory stimulant and in water treatment and paper industries to regulate pH.
Carbon dioxide (carbonic acid) is added to drinking water to control pH, and to carbonated drinks including beer, cider and sparkling wine to prevent fungal and bacterial growth.
The frozen solid form of carbon dioxide, known as dry ice, is used as a refrigerant for transport and for cleaning by dry ice blasting. It is also a raw material for the synthesis of fuels and chemicals. Carbon dioxide and argon are components of the most common gas mixtures, that act as shielding gas during welding and cutting to provide safe welding joints.
Carbon dioxide is supplied both as compressed gas and liquid, in a range of pack sizes and purities and can be supplied both in a gas cylinder and via tanker.
